1926 - 2018
Robert Gordon McCain slipped away peacefully on January 16, 2018 with family around him. He was born July 21, 1926 in Compton, California to Frank H. and Mable Lee McCain. During his years in Compton he caught fish and sold them to his neighbors. He also worked at an ice skating rink and loved to skate and was a very good skater. During his high school years he worked at Mac's Filling Station, his father's gas station. After World War II started, he joined the Navy in 1944 and served on the USS Le Hardy and the USS Lofberg as a Motor Machinist's Mate Third Class. The ships took him to various places in the Pacific and to Shanghai, China. When the war ended he was on his way home to Lynn's Valley when his parents took him to dinner with the Warkentin's. It was at that dinner he met the love of his life. He married Gladys Charlene Warkentin on February 16, 1947 and they had a wonderful life together for 68 years. Gordon and his brother, Bud, joined as partners and started B & G Machine & Welding in 1951. 67 years later it's still in business. He had a passion for fishing and hunting. During his retirement years every summer was spent with Gladys fishing Humboldt Bay and beyond with their boat the "Happy Bottom". Gordon was a firm believer in Christ and prayed awesome prayers at every meal and gathering. To quote him he said "I've lived a good life, served my country, provided for my family, caught a lot of fish and killed a lot of bucks and I'm ready to see Heaven". He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys, his sister Frances Smith and his brother George "Bud" McCain. He is survived by his daughter Sharon Davis and husband Rick, his son James McCain and wife Joy, granddaughters Dawn (Ken) Collins , Jennifer McCain, Carrie (Ralph) Navarro, Joanne (Frank) Amestoy, Jamie McCain, and Nichole Bazan He has been blessed with ten great-grandchildren.
