Raymond Thomas Gavin, born September 2nd, 1927 to parents Ted and Clara Gavin in Bakersfield, CA and passed away May 20th, 2019 at age 91, after a short illness in Cayucos, CA. Ray Gavin grew up in east Bakersfield, CA and graduated from East High School, class of 1944. After high school he joined the Army where he was staff sergeant overseeing 31 soldiers during WWII. After service to his country, Ray became a master carpenter and co-owner of Ken and Ray's Cabinet Shop. He married Evelyn Jean Tatum in 1951 and raised sons, Rickie Thomas Gavin and Dwayne " Dewey" Gavin. He lived his life dedicated to his family, and retired in 1985 to Cayucos, CA. Ray was also known as "Cowboy" due to the cowboy hat he wore in retirement. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards or dominos with family and friends. He was a big kidder, a New England Patriots fan, and a passionate Trump supporter just to agitate others. His laugh was infectious and he lived a full life of work and while in retirement, he enjoyed his view of Cayucos saying "Someone has to do it". He grew in his faith to Jesus Christ. He read his bible and had many long discussions with his son Rick to understand what the bible was all about. Ray supported missionaries, charitable organizations and people.
Ray leaves behind, his son Rick Thomas Gavin, DDS and wife Pam of Bakersfield, CA. and grandchildren Connor, Caitlin and Corbin Gavin. Other grandchildren include, Erin Gavin Grover, of Riverdale, Utah, and Keagan Gavin of Bakersfield, CA. Ray is also a great grandfather to 7 grandchildren. He was often a father figure to many dear friends in Cayucos. Ray was a man who worked hard, lived simply and was well loved by his family in Bakersfield.
