Melba was born at Kern General Hospital to Elvin and Hazel Peaker on December 17, 1943. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Edward Peaker and Eugene Peaker.
Left behind to cherish Melba's memory are the love of her life and husband of 53 years, Edwin Leon Harris, daughter Cheryl Harris Scott (Darren), and grandsons Jacob and Zachary. Melba loved her family dearly and she is survived by siblings Haskell Peaker (Diana), Sharon Davis (Glen), Dale Joyner (Janet) and Doreen Rivera (Roland), plus many beloved nieces and nephews.
Melba grew up in Lamont and graduated from Arvin High School in 1961. One month later, she and Leon were married, beginning a 53-year marriage that many have looked to as an example of true love and devotion.
Melba's entire career was spent at the Lamont School District, beginning as a teacher's aide in 1969, then moving to Mt. View Middle School in 1974 where she began as school secretary and retired as office manager in 2000. Melba received great joy working with young people and watching them grow into successful adults.
Melba enjoyed golfing with family and friends at Sycamore Canyon Golf Course before her illness made it difficult to play. She also enjoyed any activities that brought her family and friends together, including watching her grandsons play sports, family holiday celebrations, or her weekly Lunch Bunch Bible Study. She enjoyed day trips to area casinos and visiting the central coast.
Her beautiful smile, sense of humor, and warm personality made people want to be friends with Melba. In her final weeks, while receiving care at Glenwood Gardens, Melba forged new friendships with many staff members. Visits from these new friends, and her long-time friends and family, brightened her days and filled her heart with happiness.
Melba was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 23 at Hillcrest Memorial Chapel.
