Joan Sims was born February 10, 1927 to William Kenneth Carter and Ruth Elizabeth Dice-Carter in Wilmington, Ohio. She passed away April 19, 2014 in her home in Bakersfield, in the arms of her angels - daughters Rebecca Boren, Barbara Dupree, and Paulette Wrisley.
In 1943, at 16 years old, Joan worked for the Willys-Overland Automotive in Toledo, Ohio, the manufacturer of Jeeps used in World War II. She served the war effort as a quality inspector and was awarded the Army-Navy E Award for Excellence for her superior work there. She soon after worked for Champion (spark plugs) doing office work, again for the war effort.
In 1945, Joan married Edward Lee Pittman, and was widowed in 1968. They had seven children: Rebecca Lee, Robert Dean, Barbara Ann, Edward Lee Jr., Marlin Duane, Paulette Sue, and Michael Lain.
From 1972-2010 Joan spent nearly 40 years with Dawson Leroy Sims, who predeceased her in 2012. She served as bookkeeper for Dawson's Bryant Radiator Service during this time.
Joan served the Awana Childrens Ministry at Calvary Bible Church for 14 years. She also served the Al Anon organization for many years as treasurer, and prepared and served weekly luncheons for AIDS support groups. Her hobby passion was crocheting, winning first place awards at the Kern County Fair. Her greatest joy was doing for others. She could not sit idle! And oh the many camping trips for the whole family!!
Joan is also predeceased by three sons: Robert Dean, Edward Lee, Jr., and Michael Lain; and one great-grandchild, David Joshua. She is survived by daughters: Rebecca, Barbara, Paulette (& Tom); son: Marlin; grandchildren: DeAnna (& Paul), Vikki, Sean (& Keely), Derek (& Brandy), Saundra, Katrina, Scott, Jennifer; great-grandchildren: Brent, Danielle(&Jason), Brittany, Jareb, Ciana, Jacob, Josh, Daniel, Freya; and great-great-grandchild Hunter.
Pallbearers: Sean Dupee, Paul Estrada, Brent Estrada, Jacob Boren, Daniel Murray, Tom Mazzarella.
Service will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary (graveside) at 2 pm Saturday April 26, 2014.
Reception/luncheon afterwards at 301 Tanner Michael Dr.
