Jim was born in Crescent, OK on August 1, 1936. He was a train engineer for over 40 years and remained passionate about trains until the day he died. He served in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1961. Later in life, Jim became a crossing guard at Veterans Elementary, where the children loved him and he loved them back. Jim was adored by all who met him, including his dear friends at St. Francis and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton churches. He became Grand Knight for St. Francis Council 977 and later, he was especially proud to have helped establish the Knights of Columbus Council 14754 and became the first Grand Knight for this council at St. Elizabeth.
Jim is now reunited with his wife, Barbara (Allen) Dutton of 63 years, who preceded him in death, his son David Dutton, and his granddaughter Ashley. He is survived by his children Michelle (Dutton) Marquez and spouse Steve, and Richard Dutton and spouse Jennifer, as well as his grandchildren, Patricia Marquez, Steven Marquez, Kali Ochoa, Kandace Soto, Brittani Dutton, and Caitlyn Dutton, and his 6 great-grandchildren, Cody Owens, Myleigh Ochoa, Levi O’Brien, Cambria O’Brien, Sucelly Soto, and Samuel Soto who cherished every moment with him.
A rosary will be held August 9, 2024 at 9:30am. Memorial Mass will take place at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton at 10am, with graveside services held at 2pm. There will be a reception held at St. Elizabeth’s immediately following the Mass.

A funeral service for James will be held Friday, August 9, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 12300 Reina Rd, Bakersfield, CA 93312. Following the funeral service will be a graveside service from 2:00 PM to 2:40 PM at Funeraria Del Angel Hillcrest, 9101 Kern Canyon Road, Bakersfield, CA 93306.
