It is with broken hearts and great sadness that the Davis family announces the passing of Garry Davis on December 20, 2022, in Bakersfield, California at the age of 76. Garry fought his health battles with grace, honor, and dignity….and, of course, humor.
Garry was born at home during a stormy night on December 10, 1946, along with his identical twin brother Jerry, in Spiro, Oklahoma to Leon and Myrtle Davis. Garry moved with his family in 1948 to Wasco, California. Garry began working at a very young age and knew what it meant to work hard. He worked in the fields alongside his brother and later at a gas station in Tehachapi. Garry graduated from Tehachapi High School in 1964 where he played football, basketball and participated in Track & Field (shot put). He met the love of his life, Merry, while attending Bakersfield College; they married under the stars on a summer evening in August 1967 in Caliente, California. When his country called for his service, he joined along with his brother and spent time in Little Rock, Arkansas and Baltimore, Maryland before serving his country with Army Military Intelligence at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines. Upon his return to the States, he attended California State University, Bakersfield and earned his degree in Sociology while working for the Kern County Probation Department. Soon after his graduation, Garry joined the Kern County Sheriff’s Department. Garry worked in many different areas of the Department over the years, but his heart was the Homicide Unit. His empathy and intuition made him a good detective. His compassion and leadership made him a great Sergeant.
Garry was an amazing husband, the best father anyone could have asked for, a loving Papa to his grandchildren, and a wonderful son and brother. Garry was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Myrtle Davis. He is survived by his wife and best friend of 57 years, Merry; his daughter Stacy and her husband Brian Douglas; grandchildren Riley and Sydney Douglas; twin brother Jerry Davis and wife Roberta; sister Carolyn Davis; niece Allison Davis; and nephews Jason Davis, Kirk Breault, and Tim Breault. His dog, Wesley, misses him too - and all the food he dropped on the floor. Upon Garry’s request, no services will be held. Any future gatherings in his memory will be announced via social media. If so inclined, donations may be made in his name to Michael J. Fox Foundation at https://www.michaeljfox.org/. Finally - please eat a piece of dark chocolate in memory of Garry - it was his very favorite thing.
Special thanks to Garry’s twin brother and wife, Jerry and Roberta Davis, without whom we could not have managed these past couple of years. We also want to thank his dialysis transportation drivers Mayo and Orlando who were so kind to him. Garry would also want us to thank all the doctors and health practitioners involved in his care, the staff at Fresenius Dialysis, and the compassionate ICU staff at Memorial Hospital who attended to him and his family during his final transition. May flights of Angels sing thee to thy rest. We love you more than there are grains of sand on the beach, fish in the sea, and waves in the ocean. Rest easy, sweet Papa.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.hillcrestmemorial.com for the Davis family.
