Dortha Pilcher, a teacher in Bakersfield area for 37 years, passed away on February 4th, 2014, from complications after surgery. She had recently turned 79. Dortha was born on January 23, 1935 in Henrietta, Texas. She obtained an AA degree in 1955 from Decatur Baptist College and a teaching degree from
Mary-Hardin Baylor in 1957. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa sorority. Upon graduation, Dortha moved to Bakersfield where she taught at Roosevelt and Sunset schools. After retiring in 1994, Dortha became active in the Bakersfield performing arts community. She worked at Stars Dinner theater and volunteered at Civic Light Opera. Dortha had a broad range of interests including painting, sewing, quilting and raising roses. She was an avid supporter of women's athletics.
Dortha is survived by her two nieces, Dr Kaye Bragg, Long Beach, California, and Pat Bragg, Denver, Colorado, and her loyal dog Mocha, as well as many loving friends.
