Robert Jon Fontane

Robert Jon Fontane passed away peacefully on January 7, 2023. Predeceased by his adoring wife Fran Fontane in 2021. Devoted father of Kristen and Brian Gallagher, and Andrea and Randy French. Loving Pop of Conner, Peyton, Mason, Maxwell, Miller, and Mollie.

Bob received his undergraduate degree from St. John's University. He instantly became a devoted Red Storm basketball fan. He attended games regularly with his wife and followed them closely each season. Bob was a secondary English teacher for 33 years with the Jericho School District. In addition to teaching, Bob coached many sports including football, soccer, swimming, and softball. He also served as a coordinator for a lecture series where he was able to arrange a meeting with Baseball Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson for his students. Bob organized many toy drives and planned outdoor education opportunities at Snow Hill. After retiring from teaching in 2000 Bob started his second career as a Financial Advisor with ING.

Bob had many hobbies. One of the hobbies he was most proud of was bird carving. He created beautifully hand-crafted wood birds that were not only displayed at his home but entered into many contests winning blue ribbons. Bob and his wife Fran spent many summers boating and enjoying the beach. They loved to travel and often traveled to warm destinations in the winter. They truly shared a love for the water and the sense of calm it brought them. Bob was an avid golfer and played golf whenever he wasn’t on his boat.

His greatest joys were his children and grandchildren, and his proudest title was Pop. He will always be remembered for his loving, generous and kind heart. His faith was strong and guided him every day. He will be forever missed and loved deeply by all who knew him.
