Born on April 12, 1948, at Huntington Hospital, he was the beloved son of Leonard C. Ward and Alice Ward. Leonard, known to many as Lenny, spent his early years on 9th Avenue in Huntington Station before moving to 322 Broadway in Huntington in 1966.
Lenny graduated Walt Whitman High School and attended Berkley School. He was a proud Veteran of the U.S. Army, during the Vietnam War era. After his honorable discharge, he embarked on a successful career with NY Life Insurance, Powers Chem Co., and ultimately retired from the Town of Babylon in 2010.
On January 9, 1971, Lenny married Cheryl, the love of his life. Together, they raised three sons, Maurice Charles, Jarrett Damon, and Ramone Cliffton. Their family grew with the addition of six cherished grandchildren, Jalen, Emma, Bailey, Brennan, Bryson, and Benjamin. He was cherished by his sister, Claudia Ward and the late Jacqueline Ward. Lenny will be fondly remembered by his niece and nephews, Kerwin Wooten, Erica Pouncie-Wise, and Eric Pouncie.
Lenny’s passion for music was a defining part of his life. As a talented drummer, he played in his high school band, which even appeared on the Merv Griffin Show. His love for music continued with his involvement in the Babylon American Legion Pipe Band, where he played the snare drum. His enthusiasm for music was matched by his love for football, which he played in high school and supported avidly through his sons and grandchildren’s games. He was also a lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers fan.
Lenny’s community involvement extended to his role as Post Commander of the Babylon American Legion Post 94 from 1986-1987, where he made history as the first African American commander. He was also a member of Post 40/8 and enjoyed spending time at the Brentwood American Legion.
