Colin Harris, a life completed and not cut short!
Colin was born at the start of the great depression in the mining town of Halling in Kent, England. He joined the British Army in 1945 at the age of seventeen and served in WWII.
He met his sweetheart Eunice Sayers of Maidstone, Kent during his leave from the army. They were married on August 12, 1950 and embarked on, what he would say was a “54 year love affair”.
They emigrated to the USA in 1957 and settled in New York City. After a short stint as a haberdasher he landed a job at B.O.A.C. and worked his way up into senior management. He and Eunice traveled the world for several years until they had their first child Glenn in 1961 and later in 1965, Andrew.
In the 1970’s Colin became an accomplished sailor. He loved the Great South Bay and explored its treasures for several decades. In his late 40’s he became interested in running. It would become the biggest part of his life, running marathons that would take him from New York to Boston to Bermuda to London. He was a gifted athlete who earned the respect of his running peers in the Long Island Running Club.
Colin leaves behind a legacy that generations to come will be proud of and hope to in some way emulate.
"I can't think of a more wonderful thanksgiving for the life I have had than that everyone should be jolly at my funeral" - Admiral Lord Mountbatten
