Brenda Elaine Moore was born on February 5, 1948 in NY, NY to Weldon Mason and Elvera Mason (Maiden name Walwin). She was their only child. Brenda grew up in South Jamaica, Queens where she attended Shimer JHS and then attended Clara Barton High School in Brooklyn, NY where she graduated as a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1965.
Brenda was married to the late James M. Moore Sr. on May 14, 1966 until his passing in July 1982. To this union two children were born; James M. Moore Jr. and Dawn R. Moore where they resided in Jamaica, NY. In October 1978, the Moore family moved to North Babylon to a new life and home on Long Island.
Brenda started work at Parkway Hospital in Forest Hills, NY in 1966. She then worked at the Queen of Peace Nursing Home in Jamaica, NY from 1970 until making the move to Long Island to the East Neck Nursing Center in West Babylon, NY in 1983. After graduating from the State University of NY at Farmingdale in May of 1994 as a Registered Nurse, she started the last chapter of her nursing career at the Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, NY in September of 1995. She began working the night shift in the Medical ICU Unit and then in 2001, for the first time in her career, moved to days in the Ambulatory Surgery Unit (ASU) until her retirement in September 2013.
Brenda didn’t just work, she lived. Often called the ‘Nurse of the World’ and ‘The Mayor’ she maintained close relationships with friends and family, traveled, partied, loved her phone chats with everyone, lived for her hair appointments, her yearly home improvement projects, sending greeting cards, shopping on QVC and her favorite, speaking her mind.
On September 22, 2022 Brenda was diagnosed with Metastatic Cancer after a short hospital stay and departed this life on October 1, 2022. In her final days she was surrounded by friends and family via personal visits, messages and phone calls and the caring staff of the Medical ICU at the Good Samaritan Medical Center in West Islip, NY where she spent her time being Brenda by telling stories, keeping it real and being impressed by all the new nursing technology.
Brenda was preceded in her death by her father Weldon, her mother Elvera, and her husband ‘Jimmy’. She leaves to cherish her memory her son James M. Moore Jr. of Colorado Springs, CO; daughter Dawn R. Moore of Wheatley Heights, NY, a host of cousins from the Walwin/Walwyn families and friends and colleagues that loved her and will miss her every day.
