It’s with great sadness that the family of Marguerite “Margie” Arley Holbrook (nee MacDonald) announce her peaceful passing on Saturday, May 4th 2019 at Thorncliffe Place Retirement Residence in Ottawa ON. Margie was born on November 2, 1931 to Murdock Angus MacDonald and his wife Mary Willena “Lena” MacDonald in Glace Bay NS. She grew up in a proud and loving family with her brother Allistair (Linda) and sister Wilma. She graduated Morrison High School, Glace Bay NS and studied at Glace Bay General Hospital’s School of Nursing to become a Registered Nurse (RN) in 1953. She worked as a nurse in various locations such as Glace Bay, Halifax, Bermuda, Kitchener, Toronto and Ottawa. Margie continued to work in the field she loved until retiring from the Perley Rideau Veterans Health Centre in 1996. She often said to her family that “She loved every minute of nursing”.
In January 1961, she met the love of her life, Harry Rolph Holbrook Jr. and they were married after a whirlwind courtship on July 08, 1961. Their love for one another was admired by anyone who knew them. Margie and Harry were married for almost 45 years until his sudden death in June 2006. He remained her only love. Margie was also predeceased by her parents and brother Allistair. Left to grieve her passing are her children Harry (Yvonne Drake), James “Jim” (Lucia Sepulveda), Lincoln (Elsa Florez) and Mary Jean “MJ” (Sean Marks); her grandchildren Megan, Kaitlyn, David, Denise, Morgan, Bryan, Wyatt and Colton; and her lifelong friend and sister Wilma. She will also be missed by friends as well as extended family members from the MacDonald, Holbrook, Drake, Sepulveda, Florez, Mackie and Marks families. She will be remembered for her sharp mind, wicked sense of humor, her devotion to her family and her kindness to everyone. She was genuinely loved by all!
The family would like to thank all the staff at Thorncliffe Retirement Home for the compassionate and dignified care you provide Margie over the last two years. Your kindness to her and her family will never be forgotten. We’d also like to thank LIHN & Carefor for the palliative care services they provided that made her last few weeks peaceful. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation in memory of Margie to the Dementia Society of Ottawa, Thorncliffe Place Retirement Residence or Trait D’Union Outaouais.
