1932 – 2021
With deep sadness, we announce that Bernie Hughes of Aylmer, Quebec, passed away on Sunday, May 9, 2021 at the age of 89. Bernie is survived by Eleanor (nee Milks), his beloved and dedicated wife of 67 years, his children Stephen, Shaun (Donna), Phred (Anne) and Kathy (Tom), his grandchildren Aia, Aaron (Angela), Kevin (Jen) and Cheryl along with great-grandchildren Caleb, Ayrton, Regan, Mila, and many nieces and nephews.
Bernie retired from a long career with Communications Securities Establishment to enjoy life at the family cottage, fishing, wildlife carving and puttering around his workshop. He was an avid sports fan, supporting the Ottawa Rough Riders/Renegades/RedBlacks (he was thrilled to see the Grey Cup back in Ottawa in 2016) and especially the Ottawa Senators; he loved kids and was always the first to organize the neighbourhood kids, and some parents, for road hockey or touch football games. Bernie was always willing to help out anybody with anything and was happiest when he was surrounded by friends and family, having a beer and shooting the breeze. He will be sorely missed and fondly remembered by many.
Due to the current Covid-19 Pandemic, a private funeral service will be held and a celebration of Bernie’s life will take place at a later date where stories and laughs can be shared. In honour of Bernie, memorial contributions to the Humane Society would be appreciated.
The family would like to thank the kind staff at La Renaissance in Aylmer for the compassionate care that Bernie received.
