Yolanda Judy Torres

On September 17, 2022, Yolanda Judy Torres, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away after a brief illness. Judy was eighty-two years old. Born and raised here in Austin, Judy graduated from William B. Travis High School in 1959 and married her high school sweetheart, Gilberto Torres, in April 1960, beginning her time as an Air Force wife and traveling the world as Gilberto was stationed in El Paso, TX; Raleigh, NC, Okinawa, Japan (where Judy joined the Red Cross in support of the Vietnam war effort); Fort Walton Beach, FL; San Antonio, TX and finally, back home in Austin, TX. Prior to Gilberto’s retirement from military service in 1979, the family moved into their dream house in South Austin in 1976, where Judy raised her three boys and called home for the rest of her life. Judy was an avid reader and loved watching her beloved Longhorns (no matter what sport). Since Gilberto’s retirement from the Veteran’s Administration in 2003, Judy and Gilberto spent time once again traveling, Judy got the opportunity to see the US in her unique way, including Judy’s favorite vacation location, Hawaii.

Judy is survived by her husband of 62 years, Gilberto and their three sons, Christopher, Michael, and Timothy, their son’s wives, Sandy, Christine and Elaine, respectively, twelve grandchildren and six great grandchildren, her sisters Luisa Sosa and Juanita Cardenas and her brother Jim Lopez. Judy was preceded in death by her biological father, Guadalupe Herrera, her mother Guadalupe Lopez, her stepfather, Pedro (Pete) Lopez, and her brothers Peter & Joseph Lopez.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, September 25th at the Weed Corley Fish Funeral Home at 2620 South Congress Avenue. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for those who are able to please make a donation in her honor to the Center for Child Protection, 8509 FM 969, Building 2, Austin, Texas 78724.
