Wayne Edgar Richards Wayne Edgar Richards was born October 31, 1929 the last child of Eldon and Lena Richards in Tingley, Iowa. He died on June 17, 2005, in Austin, Texas. Wayne attended public schools in Lorimor and Tingley Iowa and graduated from Tingley High School in 1947. He attended Simpson College, Northwest Missouri University, Denver University, and the University of Texas at Austin. He received a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education (1957) and a Masters of Education in Administration from the University of Texas (1961). Wayne served in the United States Air Force January 2, 1951 to December 7, 1954. During that time he was assigned permanent party at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He was assigned to Personnel and as a Career Counselor to Basic Airman. Waynes educational assignments included: Social Studies and Science teacher in 5th 8th grades in Seymour, Iowa; and in Austin, Texas as a 6th grade teacher at Zilker Elementary, Head Teacher at the old Winn Elementary, Principal at the old Wooldridge, Bryker Woods, Highland Park, Katherine Cook, and Winn Elementary Schools. He was also the first anglo to integrate a total Black School as Supervising Principal at St. Johns Elementary School. Wayne served as President of the Austin Educators Association (1966) and as Treasurer of TSTA District 13. Following his retirement January 1, 1986, Wayne volunteered with ASA as a Helper, Advocate, and as a Buddy. Later he became very active as a volunteer with the Auxiliary to St. Davids Medical Center and served as President and several years as Treasurer. He was a member for more than twelve years and gave more than 10, 000 hours of service. Wayne was a Life Member of the Texas State Teachers Association, National Education Association, Texas Parent Teachers Association, the Auxiliary to St. Davids Medical Center, and the University of Texas Ex-Students Association. He was also a member of the Austin Retired Teachers and the Texas Retired Teachers Associations. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eldon and Lena Richards; sister, Margaret; brother, Lyndon; and his significant companion, for 48 years, Charles Weldon York. Wayne enjoyed traveling with Weldon and together they visited all of the European countries, Norway, Sweden, Finland, St. Petersburg, Russia, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Mediterranean Islands, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, China, Thailand, Chili, Argentina, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama Canal, Canada, and 49 of the United States. They enjoyed cruises as well as return visits to favorite cities. He is survived by sister, Leola Bastow; brother, Frank Richards; a host of nieces and nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews and very special friend, Gene Domon. A Memorial service will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 25, 2005 at the Smith Chapel at Riverbend Church, 4214 Capital of Texas Highway North, Austin.
