Walter Young Walter Young, age 89, of Austin, passed away on Sunday, December 2, 2007. Walter was born September 3, 1918 in Cairo, Illinois. He graduated from East St. Louis Senior High School and went on to the University of Illinois, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry in 1942. Walter enlisted in the Army Air Corp. in 1942 serving in the European theatre until the end of the war. He met Janet Tomes in England, and on December 31, 1943. They were married in Edinburgh, Scotland. His military career continued in the US Air Force Reserve for the next 36 years. After the war, they returned to East St. Louis, Illinois. He worked for Anheuser Busch as a research chemist, retiring in 1983 after 35 years of service. He enjoyed working with his two sons in the BSA, the optimist club and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in East St. Louis. He was preceded in death by a son, Roderick Young, in 1982. He is survived by Mrs. Janet Young; his son, Stuart Young; four grandchildren, Brandon Young, Amy Thomas, Renee Young and Roderick Young; two great-grandchildren, Erin Young and Brielle Thomas; and by his brother, Clyde Lee Young, Jr. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 6, 2007 at Austin Memorial Park with Military Honors.
