Walter B. Jones Jr. was born on April 17, 1940, in Austin, Texas, where he remained a longtime resident. Walter peacefully passed in his home on Tuesday, February 13, 2018, after suffering from esophageal cancer. He was preceded in death by his father, the Rev. Walter B. Jones Sr., and mother, Stella Mae Daniels Jones. Walter is survived by Jo Long and her husband of San Antonio, Texas, as well as his extended family of aunts, uncles, and numerous cousins as well as close friends. Walter received his B.A. in Sociology from Huston-Tillotson College in Austin, Texas, and served in the United States Military where he received an Honorable Discharge. Walter worked as a social worker, counselor, and at various periods in his life, as a landscaper and master gardener. He loved working with plants and flowers, and was always enthusiastic to show and talk about his most recent masterpieces. Walter had a unique personality and told it like it was unapologetically. In his later years, he made an impression with his sense of humor, positivity despite his circumstances, generosity and love of a good home-cooked meal. He recalled fondly memories of travels in Costa Rica, and up until the very end of his life, had hopes to return.Service will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2018, 11am, in the Mercer Memorial Chapel of Fuller-Sheffield, 2808 E MLK Jr. Blvd, Austin, TX, 78702.
