Our beloved mother, Velma Mae Gentry Smith Johnson, was born to the union of Thomas and Charlie Mae Gentry on November 29, 1937 in Travis County. She was the second oldest of five children. She professed a hope in Christ at an early age and united with Pleasant Valley Baptist Church and later joined Freedom Temple Pentecostal Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Lee and Ruby Collins. She was united in holy matrimony to Johnny Smith and this union was blessed with five children: Kenneth, Debra, Leonard, Bryan, and Donna. She later married Edgar Johnson.
