Travis R. Phillips

Travis R. Phillips passed after a short illness on July 21, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. The son of Lowell Travis Phillips, Jr., and Alice Tucker Phillips, he was born February 20, 1948 in Longview, Texas. He grew up in the Greggton area, attending Pine Tree schools. While in school he enjoyed participating in sports, swimming, and lifeguarding, and was particularly blessed to have the opportunity to work for Paul “Pop” Stamper, who was a great influence in his life. During the summers, he particularly enjoyed working as a lifeguard and then manager at the City Natatorium. He graduated from the Pine Tree High School class of 1966, and then attended Kilgore Junior College and Stephen F. Austin State University, graduating 1970. Thereafter, he moved to Austin to enroll in the University of Texas School of Law, graduating with a juris doctorate in 1972.

While in law school, he became involved in a trial practice program under the juvenile public defender for Travis County, and was employed there as a law clerk during his last year in school. He subsequently served as only the second juvenile public defender in the program from 1973 to 1975, after which he went into private practice, where he engaged in civil litigation and was an active member of the Austin legal community for many decades.

Travis was appointed to the Rollingwood Planning Commission and served from 1985 to 1986, before being elected Mayor of Rollingwood in 1986, a position which filled him with unending pride. He and his family were residents of Rollingwood for more than 35 years.

He is predeceased by his adored wife, Mary Bialaszewski Phillips, his beloved parents, and much beloved uncle, William Henry Phillips (Susan) of Jacksonville, Texas. He is survived by his wonderful son, Travis J. Phillips, his beloved brother Tim Phillips (Joy), his sisters-in-law Mary Bialaszewski, Helen Baylor, and Henrietta Adee, and his nieces and nephews Jason Bailaszewski, Matthew Bialaszewski, Michael Bialaszewski, Jeffrey Daily, Kelly Faulkner, Sherri Flynn, Mycha Ferguson, Robert Lane, Elizabeth Phillips, Christopher Phillips, and Jennifer Tello.

Visitation will be Friday, July 26, 2024, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 2620 South Congress Ave., Austin, TX 78704. Service will be at Weed-Corley-Fish on Saturday, July 27, 2024, at 11:00 am. Following the service there will be a reception at the same.

While flowers are beautiful and appreciated, Travis asked prior to his passing that you do a random act of kindness for a stranger or donate in his name to the charity of your choice.
