Thomas Owen Powell Thomas Owen Powell, age 98, died Thursday, August 23, 2007. Mr. Powell was born October 19, 1908 in Ballinger, Texas, the son of John Ellsworth and Alda Powell. He married Cleta Vee Gill on January 12, 1935. He graduated from Ballinger High School and attended Texas Tech University then returned to Ballinger where he was employed by the Texas Highway Department until the beginning of WWII. During the war years he was employed by the U.S. Corp of Engineers in the construction of air fields and Army camps in Texas and Oklahoma. In 1946, he transferred to the Federal Highway Administration in Austin where he worked until retirement in 1974. Mr. Powell was preceeded in death by his parents, two sisters, Edith Riggs and Alda Mae Hirschfelt and one brother, Donald Powell. He is survived by his wife Cleta, son Thomas E. Powell, daughter Saundra Parker and husband Don; four grandchildren, Thomas M. Powell of Austin, Tracy E. Powell and Renee from Elgin, Becky Parker of Austin and Lori Parker of Houston; great-grand children Sarah Esquivel from Austin, Peggy Powell, and McKalla Powell from Elgin. He was an active member of Hyde Park Christian Church where he served in many capacities including Chairman of Deacons, Chairman of Trustees, and Sunday School Teacher, but was most proud of being appointed Life Elder. Pallbearers are: George Casey, Merle Lentz, Bob Grundy, Fred Conder, Leonard Ferrell, Karl Schlessinger, Ernest Kelley and Leland Stevenson. Honorary Pallbearers are members of the M.E.T.S. Visitation will be Sunday, August 26, at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Monday, August 27, at 10:00 a.m. at Hyde Park Christian Church, 610 East 45th.
