Austin, TX, at Brackenridge Hospital losing his brave four-year battle
with cancer.
Tom was known by many names: Hershel, Hobbo, Tommy, Hobber, a charter
member of the D 9 club, Tip Top Tactical Technical Tommy, Daddy and a
friend for life. He was a gentleman, a husband and father who touched
so many and treated all with respect.
Tom earned his undergraduate degree from UCLA and a business degree
from Thunderbird, Phoenix, AZ. He started his financial career at
Continental Grain, moving on to Goldman Sachs and ultimately joined
Merrill Lynch in London following his dream of working
internationally. His love of travel opened his world to so many
possibilities and allowed him to bridge cultural and geographical
divides.
There were so many outstanding qualities “Tom possessed: intense
loyalty, determination, discipline, an appreciation for having fun, a
love of travel, a "keep the faith" attitude no matter what and a love
for his family. Tom was someone for whom vision was not some kind of
pipe dream. It was a plan, a map which could be followed to a desired
destination, using hard work, education, ingenuity and whatever time
and talent with which he was blessed. Tom lived his vision as fully as
anyone you have ever met. His zeal was inspirational to the end.”
Tom's friends and family described him as "an amazing man with a big
heart and a fantastic laugh", a booming laugh in fact, that
accompanied his "wicked sense of humor". Others would say that Tom
was "a consummate professional when it came to business, but was a
great guy to have a beer with.”
Tom battled cancer with the same enthusiasm and gusto that
characterized his life and work engaging his fighting spirit. When he
understood that he could no longer battle the cancer, he shared the
following sentiment with a friend: “I'm not afraid to die. I am not in
pain. I have had a great life and accomplished more than I ever set
out to. I am at peace with the way I lived my life."
Thomas was predeceased by his loving mother Betty (Kuykendall) Hobson.
His surviving family includes his wife Todla (Banaszak) Hobson and
daughters Margaret Faith Hobson (Chicago, IL), Caterina Anais Hobson
and Natasha Mae Hobson, his father and step-mother, Mr. & Mrs. Thomas
Hobson (Floosmoor, IL), two brothers, Phil Hobson (Lombard, IL) and
David Hobson (Wheaton, IL) and sister, Carol (Hobson) Moore
(Albuquerque, NM).
