Terry Lloyd Love, 61, of Spicewood, Texas died Sunday, May 26, 2024. Terry was born on January 30, 1963 in Johnson City, Texas and grew up in Blanco where he graduated from Blanco High School in 1981. He moved to Austin and began a 29- year career with Travis County, starting as an 18-year-old Newbie, patching roads and cutting brush; promoted in 1985 to Equipment Operator; promoted to Assistant Field Section Supervisor in 1993; within three months promoted to Field Section Supervisor; in 2003 re-classified as a Road Maintenance Supervisor; and in 2008 promoted to Road Maintenance Manager, retiring in October of 2009.
Terry absorbed every bit of knowledge and experience that Travis County had to offer, especially operating equipment. He loved nothing better than getting in the seat of a Gradall and playing in the dirt. His heavy equipment skills were unmatched. As a supervisor, his goal was to always treat co-workers like he wanted to be treated. Bottom line, everyone LIKED Terry.
He carried his heavy equipment prowess into his next job as a Heavy Equipment Instructor for Speed Shore. He taught classes at TxDot offices around the state and even went back to Travis County to do some training for their current employees. Classes ended when Covid hit in 2020. But Terry wasn’t finished. He decided to go back to work for Travis County Parks Department as a seasonal employee in 2022. He enjoyed working at Pace Bend Park which was a mile from his house and had planned to continue in 2023, but a cancer diagnosis prevented his return.
Anyone who knew Terry, knew his passion was FISHING – anytime, anywhere. The stories and pictures are endless. He liked nothing better than sitting in the boat, out on the lake fishing with Chris, or the kids, or the grandkids, or with friends.
Let’s talk about Terry’s other superior skillset. HE COULD BUILD OR FIX ANYTHING!! And, HE COULD SEW!! There was nothing he COULDN’T do – from mechanics, to school projects, to building a house. Suffice to say, Chris’ bestie, Carrie Johnson, dubbed him the “Original MacGyver.” You young ones can google MacGyver!
Terry and Chris were married for over 41 years. When anyone asked either of them how they stayed married so long, their response was “we actually like each other - most of the time.” Chris “robbed the cradle” when she married Terry, being eight years his senior, but as we all know, Terry was an old soul. Wise beyond his years and, in Chris’ words, marrying Terry was the best decision she ever made. Trey and Dawn were HIS kids as far as he was concerned, and he was their Dad. Always there to help with anything they needed. And then there are the Grandkids. Terry was so proud and joyous to be their PawPaw! He was front and center at sporting events, school events, graduations and any other activities that they participated in. He loved every minute of it.
Terry was the second born of six children. Lynnette, Richard, Linda, Robert and Carol can all FISH and MACGYVER right along with Terry, although he would tell them he still had a few things he could teach them. He loved all of them and was in awe of all they accomplished.
Terry is survived by his best friend and wife Chris; his son Trey Franklin, his daughter and son-in-law Dawn and Larry Hans; grandchildren Zac Franklin, Avery Franklin, Braden Hans, Riley Franklin and Colby Hans; sister and brother-in-law Lynnette and Matt McKinley; brother and sister-in-law Richard and Lettie Love; sister Linda Love; brother and sister-in-law Robert Love and Michal Lott-Love; sister and brother-in-law Carol and John Herzog. Terry was preceded in death by his parents Lester Lee Love and Jean Ann Harwell Love.
To Sweet Renee. Your Dad is welcoming Terry with open arms. Finally, someone who knows how to play 42!!
Terry will be laid to rest at the Edge Family Cemetery, close to his mother.
