Suzanne was born in Cisco, Texas where she and her parents spent her early childhood with her grandparents and other extended family. Her family relocated to Abilene, Texas for her elementary and middle school years and then to Carlsbad, New Mexico for the remainder of her junior high school years and high school. While in Abilene, she developed into an excellent tennis player, and she continued to play through high school and college. Before Carlsbad had a girls’ tennis team, she competed as a member of the boys’ team. When a girls’ team was later formed, she would go on to be District Champion and place 3rd in State Singles her senior year. She was a Sun Duchess in the 1976-77 Sun Bowl in El Paso and went on to study and play tennis at New Mexico State University where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. During these years, she made lifelong friendships.
Suzanne was a very good travel agent and specialized in Caribbean vacation destinations. She coordinated travel and accommodations for her clients which included executives of some of the top corporations in the country, really the world. Suzanne worked for Tramex Travel until she retired and had very special relationships with those she worked with that extended beyond the office.
She was blessed with artistic talent and spent much of her leisure time creating art, most of it as personal cards and mementos for her family and friends and they were often reflective of the southwestern decor and artistic style that she loved. Suzanne developed a love for the local culture and decor of all the places she would travel - especially the beaches of the Caribbean. She was also fortunate to travel throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. Her love of the outdoors extended to snow and water skiing and camping.
Always smiling, Suzanne was easy to meet and always ready to strike up a conversation and visit. She never missed an opportunity to decorate for annual holidays and birthdays. She enjoyed organizing get-togethers with family and friends so she and all could visit and enjoy one another. She had a gift when it came to having fun and putting smiles on the faces of all those she knew or had met.
Suzanne married Jerry Mercer on February 16, 1991, in Austin, Texas and this past February marked their 30th wedding anniversary. She loved her two stepchildren and three grandkids. She enjoyed garage sales and breakfast outings on Saturday mornings and rummaging through antique shops and flea markets looking for treasures, which turned into a hobby of listing and selling all sorts of stuff on eBay. She also loved her five cats she had over the years.
Suzanne is preceded in death by her mother, Sandra “Juan” Moore; grandfathers James Moore and Malloy Johnson; grandmothers Zelia Blanche Moore and Charlie Ben Johnson; and uncle Ronald Johnson.
She is survived by her husband Jerry; her father Richard; her sister Elaine and her husband Chris; her stepchildren Kristin and Branan and their spouses Jarrett and Kelan; her three grandkids Henry, Claudia and Eli; her uncle and aunt Larry and Lynn Johnson; her aunt Placida Johnson; her cousin Niki Roebuck, her husband Charlie and their daughter Alex; cousins Ronnie Johnson, Katie Gorrill, Beth Pillion and their families; her beloved in-laws and their extended families; and way too many friends to list. The recent outpouring of love and shared stories is a true testament to how Suzanne lived her life and will always be remembered.
Suzanne created many wonderful memories for family and friends throughout her lifetime. She now leaves those memories behind for all who were fortunate enough to know her to cling to and remember her by. Suzanne will always be in our hearts and forever loved.
