Sue Rodriguez was born in Austin Texas on October 6th, 1950. She grew up in a neighborhood just off 38th St. and Shoal Creek; in what would have been considered North Austin at the time. Sue graduated from McCallum High School in 1968 as one of only a few Hispanic students in her class.
Sue went on to study accounting at Blin College before beginning her professional life at an insurance agency. Though she started her career in the “white collar world”, she wouldn’t remain there for long. Sue would go on to have many varied and interesting jobs throughout her lifetime. She was a doorwoman at a downtown nightclub called Nexus, a betting agent at the racehorse track Manor Downs, a store associate at Central Market, and, finally, a residential instructor at the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired. One common thread that held throughout her employment history was her ability to make lifelong friends along the way.
Sue was a no-nonsense, tell it like it is kind of person. She was always quick to give her opinions and advice; even when unsolicited. But, if you were lucky enough to call her friend, she would hang the moon and stars for you. Sue was champion for the underdog and any poor wretched animal that crossed her path. She showed up for the people she loved, she never forgot your birthday, nor was she ever too busy to “grab a marg” when you needed someone to talk to.
Sue is preceded in death by her loving mother, Ophelia Rodriguez Guillory. She is survived by many friends. We will miss you, Sue. Rest easy, dear friend.
A memorial service for Susan will be held Saturday, October 22, 2022, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 6300 West William Cannon Drive, Austin, TX 78749.
