Susan Carol Miller Green of Lockhart passed away on March 24, 2023 at the age of 73. She was born April 27, 1949 in Las Cruces, New Mexico. She grew up in New Mexico, living in several towns including Las Cruces, Deming, Clovis, Springer, and Lovington. The Miller family was living in Lovington during Susan’s senior year of high school, and that is where she met the love of her life, Floyd Green. Following high school Susan attended New Mexico State University where she graduated with a teaching degree. Not long after graduation, Susan and Floyd married and moved to Austin, where they began their family. They were married for 49 wonderful years before Floyd’s passing in 2020.
Susan loved teaching, and taught for a total of 39 years before retiring in May 2019. She taught several different grade levels and subjects over the years. Her greatest joy in teaching came in her last assignment, which she enjoyed for over 20 years. She taught Special Education Homebound for Lockhart ISD. Susan loved her students and built relationships with the families of those she taught.
Nothing meant more to Susan than her family. Together Susan and Floyd had four children. Sarah, Julie, Zachary, and Jacob were blessed to call them their parents. She was very involved with her children and loved to take them places to experience as much of the world as they could. Weekly trips to the library and museums were part of their childhood routines. She was the adult leader of the 4-H club, taught Sunday School and VBS, and was the PTA president. Julie and Jacob’s friends often enjoyed weekends at the Green household, and she showed her love in many ways, and caring for her children’s friends was just one of them. She loved their friends as her own and could often be heard giving them loving advice and keeping them honest during those difficult teen years. After her children grew up, she enjoyed being a NaNa to 5 grandchildren. She attended every school event and game she possibly could, and would call for updates and videos if she was unable to attend. The kids loved to visit NaNa’s house, where she would have art projects for them to do or bake cookies with them.
Susan called First Lockhart Baptist Church home for 30 years. She loved her church family, and attended every Sunday. She enjoyed the ladies bible study group on Wednesday evenings, and after retirement, on Tuesday mornings. She was a member of the Ruth Sunday School class and called the ladies in that group some of her closest friends.
After retirement Susan was excited to join the Texas Retired Teachers Association of Caldwell County. She volunteered at local school events and attended fundraisers and meetings as often as possible. She was proud to be a retired teacher, and loved being able to volunteer now that she was outside of the classroom.
One of the things that Susan and Floyd were most proud of was Jacob’s service in the United States Marine Corp. She was a very active member of the Canyon Lake Area Blue Star Mothers Association for many years. One of the things that she enjoyed doing was completing memory books for the mothers of fallen troops in our area. She would spend months talking with friends and family of the service member, and then spend hours on each page to create a scrapbook of memories for the parents and family. Each book was a labor of love for her, and very carefully done to honor the memory of the fallen.
Susan is preceded in death by her parents, LeRoy and Sybeline Miller, infant daughter Sarah Green and baby son Zachary Green, sister Sharolyn Linton, and husband Floyd Green. She is survived by daughter Julie Juarez and her husband John along with their sons Tiago and Kyrie, as well as son Jacob and his wife Phila along with their daughters Rylie, Mykinzee and Karlee. She is also survived by her brother in law Thomas Linton and significant other Cindy Foreman, sister in law Rhonda Beal and husband Frank, brother in law David Green and wife Janice, sister in law Peggy Whisner and significant other Dana Thompson, and numerous nieces and nephews.
