Sue Smith, age 76, died peacefully November 27 in Austin, after a long debilitating battle with Parkinson's disease. Sue was born in Clearwater, Florida and graduated from Clearwater High School and Jackson Memorial School of Nursing in Miami.
She loved her careers as an operating room nurse in Gainesville, Florida and Houston and as a mother to her daughters Alicia and Sabrina. After retirement, she and her husband Doug moved to Georgetown where she devoted herself to helping others, especially those less fortunate. She was a lifelong Methodist and a member of Georgetown First United Methodist Church; her oft stated personal theology was "it doesn't matter what you believe; it's how you live your life and what you do for others".
Sue volunteered for 15 years at the Caring Place and served on their Board of Directors. She was proud of her role in the expansion and success of the Caring Place in meeting the needs of people in Georgetown.
Sue was instrumental in the founding of the Georgetown Community Clinic, volunteering as a nurse in the University Avenue clinic. She served on the original Clinic Board and on the Board of its successor organization, The Lone Star Circle of Care. She was gratified that the 25 Lone Star clinics now serve over a hundred thousand patients in Williamson, Travis and Bell counties.
Sue was preceded in death by her mother, Grace Thompson. Surviving immediate family include her husband of 55 years, Doug; daughters, Alicia Smith Kriese and Sabrina Schiller; brother, Larry Thompson; grandsons, Alex Kriese and Miles Schiller; granddaughters, Eve, Shea and Blair Schiller; niece Tracy Gialusis; and sons in law, Richard Kriese and Adam Schiller.
Memorial service will be at 2 p.m., Friday, December 14 at Georgetown First United Methodist Church. Adam and Sabrina Schiller will host a fellowship, food and remembrance dinner at Duke's Smokehouse in Georgetown at 5 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sue's memory to the Caring Place or the Lone Star Circle of Care.
