A longtime resident of Austin and teacher in the Austin School District, Sue Rummel died January 4, 2024, in the city she had called home for most of her life. Sue lived in an enchanting, magical, and exciting world that was filled with laughter and tears, glamour, adventure and romance. She fell in love several times but never married. Throughout her whole life, she maintained a constant sense of responsibility, duty, and abiding thoughtfulness towards others. Faith was a strong and sustaining factor in her life.
She lived to read, play bridge and work crossword puzzles. She enjoyed classic movies and loved listening to classical music and operas. And she was an avid UT football fan and watched their last game days before her death.
Sue was an excellent teacher having received many honors during her professional career. She taught history and civics in middle schools at Claraville, Texas; Corpus Christi; and in Austin at Baker, Lamar, and Murchison. Her most interesting year was teaching students in the 1950s in the U.S. Army School in Munich, Germany.
She was a member of a professional sorority Alpha Delta Kappa. The University of Methodist Church held a special place in her lifetime memories.
Sue is survived by her niece Leah Rummel of Dripping Springs Tx and nephews Jack Rummel, Perinaldo Italy; Jim Rummel, Dripping Springs, Tx; and Doug Funkhouser and his wife Beth and various great nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Richard Charles Rummel and Lena Whitton, her brother Emmett Rummel and Sister Hollice Funkhouser.
It takes a village to live to 102. We would like to thank her longtime neighbors in central Austin, the staff at the Ledgestone Assisted Living facility in Dripping Springs, and the nurses and doctors at St Davids Medical Center and Hospice Austin for all their help and her care.
A private memorial will be held during bluebonnet season in Austin and Marble Falls. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Special Olympics Texas.
