Steven Charles Sawin, 64, passed away on Monday, March 10, 2014, in Austin, Texas. Born to Charles and Mary Sawin in Hollywood, CA on November 9, 1949, he was the eldest of four children. After graduating from Crespi Carmelite High School in Encino, CA, he continued his education on a football scholarship at UC Berkeley where he received his BS in Economics.
Steve married Mary Ecoff in Los Angeles, CA on April 19, 1985. Steve is survived by his wife, Mary Sawin, sons, Jack Sawin, Peter Sawin, and granddaughter, Samantha Sawin.
Steve was a quintessential entrepreneur and innovative thinker, unafraid to take risks on business opportunities. The greatest achievement in his career is the company he built, Big Byte Media. However, on every form requiring occupation he simply stated “sales”.
Upon retirement, Steve followed his lifelong dream to coach football, first at St. Michael’s Catholic Academy and later at St. Gabriel’s Catholic School. He left coaching to become a Lacrosse referee for Austin area schools. He also served on the SWLOA Board of Governors.
Steve was a warrior. He exhibited this strong spirit and winning attitude in every aspect of his life. To Steve, his greatest challenge, cancer, was no different from every other obstacle barring his way to success and he fought it valiantly. His family and friends will always hold in their hearts his fierce love for them and his strength of will. The motto “Better to live one day as a lion than 100 years as a lamb” defined Steve’s essence. He created a wonderful, welcoming home at Camp Sawin for his family and friends. Steve will be deeply missed by those whose lives he touched.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 15, 2014, at Emmaus Catholic Parish located at 1718 Lohmans Crossing Road in Lakeway, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Steven Sawin to MD Anderson Cancer Center/Immunology Research, P.O. Box 4486, Houston, Texas 77210-4486, (713) 792-3450 or (800) 525-5841; or by visiting www.mdanderson.org/gifts
