We family and friends fondly remember how Steve touched our lives: He graduated with Honors in the Class of 1975 from University of Texas’ School of Advertising and Journalism, and from that time continued to grow and evolve as a writer, editor, and avid Longhorn fan. In 1984, Steve took over as owner and editor to the bi-monthly New Texas Magazine (Austin’s oldest magazine), where he heavily promoted the local community of Austin until its final publication in 2004. Whether you were a musician in any of the nearby Bluegrass or Folk Festivals, a local Alternative/Complimentary Medicinal Provider, a local organic farmer, or just a local person trying to make a positive difference in Austin, you had an ally in Steve. He was a “social lightening rod” for the Austin community, supporting the health and well being of ancient treasures such as Treaty Oak or new treasures such as the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. A regular participant at the Kerrville Folk Festival, where he captivated listeners with stories of his adventures and was known as “Stevie Guide from Camp No Way Out”, he was both writer and musician: playing piano, guitar, flute, and harmonica, not to mention his amazing voice. Steve coordinated the annual sing along under the Zilker Christmas Tree in memory and tribute to John Lennon.
His good humor was infectious with a laugh that echoed and enveloped all in his presence; his manner, all-inclusive. Steve was often known for his annual ‘great hunt’ for the ‘perfectly unique’ Christmas Tree which generally took weeks of scouring all over Austin. Steve was a collector of many things. Anything and everything Steve touched, he kept, including our hearts. He is survived by brother Lyndon Dodds and sons: Warren, Albans, and Nigel Benchoff, along with India Rassner-Donovan and their respective families. Steve will be greatly missed by a multitude of friends whom he considered his extended family.
In honor of his wishes, Steve’s remains will be cremated. There will be a memorial followed by a celebration of his life on September 25th at the International Youth Hostel, located at 2200 Lake Shore Blvd in Austin, at 3:00 p.m. Those in attendance are asked to bring a covered dish to share. Come enjoy music and remember with joy & love.
