Stephen Pat Magee, often known as Stevie Pat by his family, died on Saturday, October 29, 2022. He was 79 years old. He was born on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 1943, in Wichita Kansas where his father built bombers during World War II.
He grew up in Lubbock, Texas and earned his bachelor’s degree from Texas Tech. He then later earned his Ph.D. in economics from MIT.
At Lubbock High School he met Nanneska “Nan” Nall, who would be his first wife. They had two children, Chris and Ted Magee. In 1988 he married Fran Hornung. He was proud to be a stepfather to Fran’s sons, Bill and Chet Hornung. Beginning in the mid-2000s, he and his partner Maryanne McLeod spent many years together. Maryanne was by his side when he passed.
Steve worked very hard and enjoyed success as a professor, teaching on the faculties of the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Chicago, and serving on the Council of Economic Advisors under President Lyndon Johnson. He moved to Austin in 1976 and taught finance at the University of Texas at Austin for 45 years, becoming the James L. Bayless/Enstar Corporation Chair in Business Administration. He taught many undergraduate and graduate students, principally on microeconomics and international finance, advised a large number of PhD students and published over 80 academic articles and three books. He also worked as an economic consultant, usually on the value of intellectual property.
Steve loved playing soccer and recruiting players onto his various teams, even as an older man. Steve loved cars, often very large cars. He loved driving fast. He enjoyed ignoring the basic reality of the passage of time and was well known for being late. Several times he abandoned his car in front of the airport, leaving the keys, and then ran to his flight, which he barely caught or completely missed.
Steve’s survivors include his sister Deborah Winders and husband Kent Winders, his sister Mary Langford and husband Larry Langford, his son Chris Magee and wife Amy Wolaver, his son Ted Magee and wife Nicole Schiro Magee, his partner of 17 years Maryanne McLeod and her two sons Fabio McLeod and Gino McLeod, his four grandchildren Owen, Ella, Will, and Alma Magee, and countless friends.
