Stan was born on December 13, 1949 in Montgomery, AL to Leon and Maymee Meeks, who precede him in death along with his older brother, Tony. He got to Texas just as fast as he could, as the family moved to the Bellaire suburb of Houston in 1954. After high school, Stan enlisted in the Coast Guard out of a desire to serve and be near the ocean. While enlisted, he spanned the globe, spending time in California, Louisiana, New York, and the Philippines. Upon his honorable discharge in 1972, Stan moved to Austin, where he attended the University of Texas and would spend the next 40+ years of his life.
After college, Stan immediately made his presence felt in the Austin business community. He became a fixture in the local real estate market for close to 20 years. Eventually, his entrepreneurial spirit led him to start several businesses, including NBC Inventory, Inc., which remains one of the most successful closeout companies in the country today.
Stan had a “larger than life” personality that was incredibly infectious to all those he came in contact with. He approached life without fear of failure and never did anything halfway. Stan’s generosity was unparalleled, and he was always ready to lend a hand to those he cared about. He was our guide, our rock, and our safety net. Stan enjoyed war movies, ice cream, Marilyn Monroe, and closing the big deal. He had a life-long love affair with saltwater fishing, a passion he inherited from his father and brother that he in turn, shared with his progeny. He spent a lifetime pursuing the elusive tarpon, his “white whale”, before finally reeling one in earlier this year. Above all, Stan lived for his children and grandchildren. They were his pride and joy, his universe, and he always made them feel incredibly loved and significant.
Stan leaves behind his son, Cody, and wife, Lauren; daughter, Crystal, and husband, Wade; grandchildren, Caleb, Carter, Wyatt, and Cooper; mother of his children, Sheila Meeks and husband, Richard Keith; brother, Charlie and wife, Jean; sister-in-law Alice Meeks; nieces and nephews; and many close friends.
A celebration of life will be held this Tuesday, November 3rd, at Austin Baptist Church beginning at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, please honor Stan by making a donation in his name to the charity closest to your heart. Stan will return to his favorite fishing spot on South Padre Island as his final resting place. He will be forever loved and missed by many.
