Brother Simon (Richard) Scribner, C.S.C., a member of the South-West Province of the Congregation of Holy Cross, died at Dujarie Residence in South Bend, Indiana, on June 23, 2010, at age 97. Brother Simon was born in Buffalo, New York, on February 10, 1913. He entered the congregation of Holy Cross in 1932. After receiving a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame and a doctorate from Catholic University in Washington, D.C., Brother Simon began a lifelong ministry in teaching. He was assigned to St. Edward’s University in 1946 where for the next forty years he served as a revered professor of English. At various times, Br. Simon served the university as registrar, hall rector, student activities director, alumni director and faculty advisor. He helped develop the innovative Model Q curriculum for the university in the 1970’s.
While first and foremost a member of the Congregation of Holy Cross, Brother Simon was also a philosopher, artist and life enthusiast. His influence, humor and wisdom touched many lives. After retiring from St. Edward’s University in 1981, Brother Simon enjoyed a second career in painting and photography until it was necessary for him to enter nursing care in Dujarie Residence in South Bend, Indiana in 2007.
Brother Simon is survived by his sister, Mary E. Schroeder of Donaldson, Indiana; his cousin, Grace French of Fort Stockton, Texas; and numerous relatives.
A viewing from 9:00 am – 10:00 am on Wednesday, June 30, 2010 at Our Lady Queen of Peace on the campus of St. Edward’s University, 3001 S. Congress Avenue, with a Prayer Service at 10:00 am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am. Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery.
