I knew Sergio from back in the days when MicroMain and DMA shared the same building. He was always a pleasure to be around. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

I was so lucky to work alongside Sergio during my years at DMA. I have many fond memories of traveling with him in his giant truck, visiting properties, eating kolaches and even taking detours off-road to examine interesting road kill.  We always had so much to talk about and we shared so many laughs. Sergio helped me when I struggled after my first son was born, and he helped keep me upright when my mom passed away. He was more than a colleague, he was a deeply caring and kind friend.  He will be missed. Sending all of my love to Judi, Gabi, Nick, and the DMA family.

We got connected to Sergio 10 years ago as DMA expanded senior housing in Austin. I greatly appreciate Sergio's dedication to provide a great place for residents to live with supportive services in place. It was nice to see Judi and Sergio together at events. I got to hear about their love story; a true role model marriage. I have also known Sergio's sister,  Isa Juarez, through her work at the Housing Authority. What a great family. This is a deeply painful time and I hope you find comfort in each other and the community supporting you now. 

Judy, New Birth By Faith Christian Center, sends condolences to you and your family. Sergio is in our hearts. We will never forget him. The most beautiful memory we have of him is when he came to our church to help with frying fish for our church fundraiser. The position he held could have made him a man who did not care about people, but he was just the opposite. We met Sergio and Judy when we moved into the Wildflower Terrace in 2012. I’ve only known Sergio a short time since coming onboard with DMA Companies 9 months ago. He worked closely with our brand new community during the lease up. I lost my father a couple of years ago & Sergio to me was a father figure- strong, kind, full of knowledge, and caring. I’m heartbroken and in shock, but each day I think about the mentorship, kindness and strength he had. His words of wisdom will ring true for many years to come. Friend, colleague, lover of food & wine, wonderful husband, great boss, a pleasure to know.  You will always be in our hearts and never forgotten.

Sergio and I first met 17 years ago, when we interviewed him at DMA and were so impressed by his experience and can-do attitude. He used the line Patricia Hensley mentioned about the key to management, and we were floored  that anyone could distill something as complex as property management to its essence and, more important, live it every day. 

But my favorite memory of Sergio has nothing to do with work. I asked him to do me a favor. I had an opportunity to visit the Austin Independent School District Alternative Learning Center, the place where students go when their behaviors are unmanageable at their assigned school. A grandmother there spoke to me, while breaking down crying, about how much the kids there need role models. Her own grandson had died while attending the ALC. I asked Sergio to give the kids there a tour of one of DMA's properties under construction in Austin. He did it without hesitation. My friends at AISD told me the kids loved him. Sergio said there was one kid who was all tatted up and misbehaving during the tour, and so Sergio went over to him and engaged with him, and somehow brought a smile to the kid's face. The misbehavior stopped, and that kid who must have been desperate for a role model like Sergio started asking questions about construction and affordable housing.

And that's who Sergio was. A big-hearted guy. He overcame all the odds to become a well-respected property management executive in Austin, but never stopped giving back. I will miss him terribly.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this sad news, and I have so many fond memories of Sergio.  As colleagues at work years ago, and friends afterwards, Sergio made an impression on my life that I will always carry with me.  We shared parallel paths in our lives with the early loss of our parents.  Both of us had a sudden, unexpected loss and a long and drawn out loss.  We shared similar paths in our careers, starting out at apartments, doing grounds, maintenance, leasing, or whatever needed to be done, and progressing to our own levels of achievement in our industries.   From all of the details of our times together, my most important memory is that Sergio was a good person.  To make a short story long, in his words, he was also a great story teller.  He made a positive impact on so many people in so many ways, myself included.  To me, it wasn't like he had to try to make a positive impact.  He just did because that is who Sergio was.  It is my hope that once the heartbreak from this loss starts to heal, that his memory will bring comfort and peace.  His memory and how he touched my life will remain with me as long as I live.  

Our family will never forget how Sergio & Judy took our mother Ana under their wing when she lived in Austin. Sergio especially. He  made sure she had everything she needed. He was always a gentleman and had plenty of love to spare.  He will be missed.

Judi, Nickolas and Gabby, I am incredibly heart broken for you all. Sergio was such an amazing person. He impacted my life in many ways and for that I will forever be grateful! I referred to him as “Pops” because that’s how I truly felt. He was my work dad, my problem solver and one of my greatest mentors. I am so honored to have known and learned from him. He will forever and always be missed.  

It doesn’t matter what you believe in, but in the end life is so precious, people are so important, and what matters most is love. As I sit here telling myself over and over again that life is beautiful, it can also be so short. I am so grateful for getting to spend years of my life with Sergio. He made it exciting and meaningful, he along with DMA gave it purpose. If the meaning of life is to find your gift, the purpose of life should be to give that gift away. Sergio gave me more than he or anyone will ever know and I appreciate him sharing his gifts with me. In the end, the things one does for themselves go away, but the things you do for others become your legacy. I would never expect him to leave anything for me, but he definitely left something in me. He will truly be missed. 

An wonderful man with the kindness and dedication only a true leader could show. Loved by all who he met along his life's journey.  Never forgotten! 

For the last 15 years, Sergio was the dad I never had.  He took me under his wing and taught me so much about the affordable housing industry.  He was always just a phone call away and was my favorite lunch partner.  I would not be in the place I am now without his leadership and guidance.  I will miss him and our chats so much.  

One of my favorite Sergio quotes is “There is no magic to Property Management.  If it’s dirty, we clean it.  If it’s broken, we fix it.  If it’s vacant, we fill it.”

What a blessing it was to have built such a fun and wonderful and lasting friendship with you. I am a much better person because you came into my life and will forever be grateful for the memories. You touched so many people with your stories, words of wisdom, perspectives, and magnetic personality. I am so lucky to have been one of those who crossed paths with you. 

Sergio has to be one of the most influential, strong willed and quick witted people I have had the great pleasure of working with. He always made me feel so good about my accomplishments here at RBJ Center and now DMA. I always saw a genuine, caring person for our elderly residents. He was a very busy man in his position. He would always walk in my office and call me by my real name "Augustine" in his stern voice when he would come in and see me. I am really going to miss that. He will surely be missed but not forgotten. May God shine His light on him and his family.  

Sergio “Checko” was a wonderful loving friend.  I had the privilege of calling him a friend throughout my high school and college years.  He was so funny and a positive force in our circle of friends.  When he met Judy it was obvious she would be his shining light forever.  I want to extend my condolences to Judy and his family.  I will keep you all in my prayers.  

Sergio was the first person I spoke with when I was thinking of leasing an apartment at Wildflower Terrace in Austin.  He was gracious, polite and helpful.  I eventually met his lovely  wife Judy and thought what a nice couple they made.  Judy, may the memories of Sergio and the love of God carry  you and your family thru this sad time, and also may you be supported  with caring from others  who were blessed to know him.
