Born in Jamestown, New York to an immigrant Italian family, he joined the Army Air Corps (now the Air Force) and was for a time stationed here in Austin at the Bastrop Air Corps Base.
Sebastian began his career as a medical doctor in Erie, Pennsylvania where he raised his family and practiced medicine until he retired in 1997. He and his wife relocated first, in 1998, to Orlando, FL and then, in 2010, to Austin, TX.
He is survived by his wife Mary Lou (Greco) Vitanza; his daughter Valerie Grier and her husband Ed of Richmond, VA; his son David Vitanza and his wife Laura Lopez of Austin. Sebastian’s family includes six grandchildren, Joshua Grier (wife Stephanie), Michael Grier (wife Satomi), Daniel Grier (partner Dr. Eric Chan), Angelo Vitanza (fiancée Lauren Gamma), Sebastian Vitanza, Carlo Vitanza; and one great-grandchild, Logan Grier, all of whom filled his last days with joy and happiness. Sebastian is preceded in death by his brother Anthony and two sisters, Francis and Louise Vitanza.
Sebastian was a dedicated, compassionate physician whose patients loved him deeply. He was an accomplished golfer who played often with friends and family. He loved life perpetually easing other’s burdens through humor and insight.
The family would like to recognize the Rodriguez/Mendoza Families for their dedication and care for Sibby late in life. Thanks to Dr. Samuel Love, nurses Bob and Lauren (Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Lakeway) for their compassion and understanding.
All are welcome to attend and celebrate Sebastian's life in a Memorial Mass and Celebratory Reception to be held at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 5455 Bee Cave Rd, West Lake Hills on Friday, January 12, 2018 at 11:00 A.M.
