Sara W. Holmes, 92, daughter of Frances and Charles Wooldridge passed away on the 22 of September 2010. Mrs. Holmes was born and raised in Terrell, Texas. She is survived by her daughter, Sara Higginbotham and son, Richard A. Holmes, both of Austin; sister, Doris Trenton and her husband, Patrick H. Trenton, of San Antonio; niece Patty Trenton of San Antonio; and nephew, Scott Trenton. Sara is a proud grandmother of Pierce and Ethan Higginbotham. Mrs. Holmes graduated from Terrell High School and the University of Texas, where she met the love of her life, Oscar W. Holmes. They were married on the 6th of December 1941. While driving to their first breakfast together as husband and wife, the news came over the car radio, that Pearl Harbor had been bombed. Oscar joined the Army and went off to war. Upon his return, he started his own business in Austin as Oscar W. Holmes Consulting Engineers and Sara was his secrety-bookkeeper for many years. Sara and Oscar loved to travel and especially enjoyed ballroom dancing. They made friends of many dancing couples that they met in ballroom dance classes in Austin. They also enjoyed an annual tradition of watching bowl games on TV, on New Year’s Day with food and friends. After Oscar’s death on the 20th of December 1984, Sara enjoyed “Birthday Club” and other luncheons with her friends, as well as continuing her long time membership in PEO and other women’s organizations. She attended St. David’s Episcopal Church and was for many years a volunteer for St. David’s Next to New Shop. Mrs. Holmes exuded grace, sophistication and warmth. She could always be depended upon for practical advice and never failed to point out how thankful she was for all that was given to her. She will be sorely missed by all those whose lives she touched. We are blessed to have known her and to have learned from her example. The family will receive friends from six o’clock in the evening until eight o’clock in the evening on Friday the 24th of September 2010 at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N. Lamar, Austin TX 78752. A Memorial Service will be held on the 25th of September 2010 at two o’clock in the afternoon at St. David’s Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers and customary remembrances, the family requests donations to St. David’s Episcopal Church, 304 E. 7th Street, Austin, TX 78767 Condolences may be made at www.cookwaldenfuneralhome.com
