Sara Alvarez Canchola passed away on Tuesday, February 20, 2007 at the age of 89. Our family is left to mourn the passing of our devoted mother, our fierce protector, who despite her own poverty sacrificed so much and inspired us to achieve her dream of a better life for her children. Our gentle mother epitomized the meaning of unconditional love. She was a wonderful lady whose beauty, graciousness, encouragement, and humor graced our lives and the lives of others in many special ways. Her wisdom and inner strength, her strong faith and generosity, and her patience and kindness have left an indelible mark on all those who knew her. We are truly thankful for all the years we were blessed to have her in our lives. Sara was born on December 15, 1917 in Kingsville, Texas to Paula Santiago Alvarez and Sebastian Alvarez. She was married to Victorino R. Canchola in 1943 and they lived and raised their children in Corpus Christi, Texas. They moved to Austin in 1981 to live near their daughter, Maria. Sara was preceded in death by her husband in 1989. She retired from AISD as a bus monitor with handicapped children. At the onset of Alzheimers, she moved in with her daughter who provided loving care and companionship for the past 11 years. She had a firm belief and trust in God and was a member of Beacon Ridge Baptist Church. We will miss her greatly and we celebrate that she is now with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She is survived by her daughter, Constable Maria Canchola, and her loving partner, Teo Ruedas, of Austin. She is also survived by her son, Dr. Samuel Victor Canchola and wife, Cindy of Belleville, her grandchildren: David Canchola and wife, Katie, Dr. Daniel Canchola and wife Melissa, Jennifer Weeks and husband Michael, Monica Canchola and Peyton Canchola. Also surviving are her great grandchildren: twins, Harrison & Hayden Canchola, Bryson and Brenner Weeks and Cullen Sebastian Canchola. Special thanks to her devoted live-in caregiver, Marisela Cruz and her Hospice nurse, BJ Masterson. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, February 23, at Beacon Ridge Baptist Church with Reverend Nelson Lanham officiating. Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery.
