Sara Belle McCoy Adcock

Sara Belle McCoy Adcock Adcock, Sara Belle McCoy, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and teacher, died on Jan 15, 2007 in Austin and went to be with The Lord. She was born in Birmingham, Alabama, March 13, 1922, the Daughter of Walter Morton McCoy and Sara Bell (Clayton) McCoy. She married Robert O. Whiddon, Jr. in 1941 and they had 3 children. Robert preceded her in death in 1968. She married the widower Willis A. Adcock in 1970. Willis died in 2003. She is survived by four of Willis’ children of his previous marriage, William, Robert, Edward and Margaret Adcock; and three children of her previous marriage, Mary, Robert and Walter Whiddon, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Sara graduated from Phillips High School in Birmingham Alabama, then attended Birmingham Southern College, where she met her first husband, “Bob O.” They married December 6, 1941, the day before Pearl Harbor. After the war, “Bob O” resumed his career as an executive with A&P. The young couple and their two toddlers Mary (1944) and Robert (1948) moved to Dallas in 1952, where the family attended Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church. Sara was very active for over 30 years at St. Luke’s in the Women’s Altar Guild, The Plaid Door and on the Vestry. Also active in the life of St. Luke’s was the Adcock family. Sara’s first husband died tragically in an airline crash in 1968. At about the same time the Whiddons lost their father, the Adcocks lost their mom, Willis’ first wife, Eleanor. In December 1970, Willis and Sara wed. Both continued to be active in the church and to travel extensively. Following Willis’ retirement in 1986, the couple moved to Austin, where he served as a professor at UT. Sara continued to be very active in the Hugenot Society, DAR, Austin Women’s Club, Symphony League, English Speaking Union, and of course, her beloved Church of the Good Shepherd. A Memorial service will be held at 2pm on Friday, January 19, 2007 at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd.
