Sandra was born in Puerto Cortez, Honduras on October 14, 1946. She spent the first 12 years of her life in Honduras until her family moved to the United States and settled in Lake Charles. Sandra graduated from La Grange High School and attended Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Sandra retired from the Texas Department of Health and Human Services, a job she held for several decades.
Sandra was an avid lover of animals, gardening, reading, the environment and the city of Austin, but her real and abiding passion was her family. She was a loving daughter, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. After her divorce, Sandra was a single mother raising a child with epilepsy and working full time. She fought for her son’s health and helped support him, her daughter-in-law and her grandchildren until the day she died.
Sandra is survived by her mother Emerita Bermingham, her son Yancey Sparks and his wife Gaby Sparks, her beloved grandchildren, Matthew and Alexa Sparks, her sister Olga Carrara and her husband John of Pearland, Texas, her brother Oscar Diaz and his wife Sandi in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, her sister Sabrina Bermingham and her wife Nikki Orvis in Chicago, Illinois, her nephew Aaron Carrara and his family in Austin, Texas, her niece Sabrina Fontenot and her family in Fulshear, Texas, her nephew Victor Diaz and his family in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Lauren Hamilton and her family in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. And last but not least, she is survived by her dogs, Apollo and Pepe.

Funeral service will be held on September 12, 2020 at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks,
6300 W. William Cannon Dr., Austin, Texas. Inurnment to follow at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Memorial Park.
