She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, dearest friend, constant companion, supporter, and helpmate of more than 64 years, George K. Herbert, and their two sons and their families, Glen Scot Herbert and his wife Stephanie Morton Herbert, grandchildren Eric Alan Herbert and Amy Christine Herbert; and son Greg Dana Herbert and his wife Nancy Ann Herbert and granddaughter Shelby Lynn Herbert, all of Austin. Ruth will be remembered as a loving, gracious, caring, and generous wife, mother, and grandmother. She served in numerous volunteer activities and officer positions with the Cub Scouts, Great Books, various Episcopal churches in Houston, New Orleans, and Austin, public schools in New Orleans and Austin, and Seton Northwest Hospital. She was an active member of the University of Texas Ladies Club and Faculty Wives Social Club, and the Mesa Oaks Garden Club, for many years.
Ruth was a professional librarian at the University of Louisville, the University of Chicago, the University of Houston, Bellaire (Texas) Community Library, Westlake (Ohio) Library, and the Cuyahoga County (Ohio) Public Library. She held degrees from the University of Lousiville (B Mus Ed) and Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio (MS in LS).
Memorial services will be held at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, 8134 Mesa Drive, Austin, Texas on Saturday, February 23, 2013, beginning at 1:00pm. Those desiring to do so, may make memorial contributions to the George K. Herbert Endowed Scholarship, School of Social Work, University of Texas at Austin, 78712.
