Ruth Hughes Foote, age 101, went to join her late husband and many dear friends on August 18, 2021. She was preceded in death by George Wilson Foote, III, her beloved husband of 54 years. She was born June 22, 1920, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hughes of Port Arthur, Texas. Ruth attended the University of Texas where she was elected Bluebonnet Belle. She was employed by Gulf Oil Corporation during World War II and had lived in Austin for the past 79 years. George and Ruth were founders and operators of Twin Oaks Fashion Shops, Inc. This corporation eventually grew to six fashion shops in the Austin area remaining in business for over 33 years. After retirement she and George spent many joyful years traveling the world together.
Ruth was a member of the First United Methodist Church serving on its administrative board and teaching a children’s Sunday School Class for 10 years. She was a member and past president of Susanna Wesley Sunday School Class and past Chairman and Treasurer of the United Methodist Women’s Circle Five. She received the Lifetime Membership of UMW of First United Methodist Church and was a faithful member for over 75 years. Ruth was involved in Care and Lay Ministry as well as being a faithful member of the Community Bible Study Group. Ruth enjoyed visiting the ill and elderly on behalf of her church. In addition, she had been active in the Texas Christian Ashram for over 50 years.
Ruth was very active in her community in multiple ways. A past president of the Current Book Review Club and had been a member for 55 years. She was a past president and member of Preceptor Epsilon Omega Business Sorority, a member of Austin Colony Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, and a former member of the Steering Committee of Brackenridge Children’s Hospital. A life member of the UT Ex-Student’s Association, a member of the Longhorn Foundation of the University and the Austin Community Foundation. Ruth and George contributed to a large part of “Old Austin.”
Ruth loved her church, her family, her home, her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces, and many friends from all walks of life.
She leaves behind many memories and love for her daughters, Cindy Foote Muller and husband John Muller; Judy Foote Rushing, six grandchildren, Paul Muller (Crystal), David Muller, Michael Muller, Christine Felan (Derek), Stephen Rushing (Jessica) and Stephanie McCallister (Michael), her great-grandchildren, Kaley, Blake, Rilee, Madison, Micah, Ella, Landon, Hollie, Chance, Bailey, and Camryn, and in addition a great-great-grandson Noah Rushing. Also, nephews Dan Hughes and Jerry Hughes and great niece Elizabeth Hughes and her daughter Houston.
Due to COVID a graveside service will be held at Austin Memorial Park on Monday, August 23rd at 10:00 am. Those attending are asked to wear a mask.
