Born in Edinburg, Texas, December 21, 1945, to Tomas G. and Jovita L. Villarreal: second of four children. Ruben grew up on a small ranch in San Manuel/Linn Texas, and was very fond of ranch life. At a very young age, he was eager to learn, and his granddads, eager to teach, with him completing tasks beyond his age, i.e. transporting cattle at the age of 13. He delighted in their adventures, as well as those with his doting grandmothers.
Ruben attended Pan American College in South Texas before joining the Air Force; obtaining the rank of Staff Sargent. After his military fulfillment, he moved to Austin, Texas, and attended the University of Texas. He began his 37 year career with the Internal Revenue Service, where he would meet his future wife, Olivia. Ruben and Olivia were wed on July 17, 1971, and God blessed them with a long and happy marriage.
He is survived by his devoted wife Olivia, two loving children, Deanna and Ruben R. Jr. (Roxana), granddaughters Alyssa and Isabella. Brother Tomas Jr. (Marielos), M.Teresa (Tony) and Carlos (Terri)). And, many loving nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his father Tomas G. and mother Jovita L Villarreal.
Ruben was an avid golfer, and played often. He enjoyed watching Saturday and Sunday golf whenever he wasn't busy or "piddling" in his garage. He felt very honored to have played golf once with Tom Kite Sr, in his early days at the I.R.S. Hunting was another passion: a knowledgeable huntsman and crack shot. He thoroughly enjoyed his time with his buddies at their deer lease, the outdoors and camaraderie - more adventures to relish. His great love was spending time at his ranch in South Texas, visiting as often as he could get away. He felt the beauty, calm and peace he experienced was unequaled. Riding on his tractor or sitting on the porch would put such a smile on his face. Ruben and Olivia enjoyed traveling as often as possible: enjoying each other's company, new adventures, the food, the scenery, in far away places and those close by.
As a husband, he was kind, loving, caring and a good man. He was an amazing father and grandpa, making his family was his world: earning his children's love, respect and admiration. His heart was filled with so much joy at the birth of his granddaughters and doted on them with every visit. Family gatherings were a favorite too, visiting with family and friends. He will remain in our hearts until we meet again.
