Roy was born in Augusta, Kansas in 1917 and lived his early years in West Texas where his dad found work in the Oil Patch. The family moved to Rising Star, Texas where he graduated from high school. In 1936 he left home to go to college at Texas Tech where he played football on the practice squad for the Red Raiders. He always referred to this period as when he was a tackling dummy for the 1st Team. He married Ruth Cassens in 1939 and lived in Robstown, Texas. Ruth and Roy were married for over 60 years.
During WW II he was in the US Navy and was stationed in Beeville at Chase Field and Corpus Christi Naval Station. He commuted to war from home during that time working as an aircraft engine mechanic.
Roy worked for Humble Oil and Exxon Company USA after the war. His career with Exxon lasted 34 years in Austin area. He is survived by his second wife Doris Smith, daughter Clare Kolar, son Roy Jr., of Austin, granddaughters Julie Kolar of Basalt, Colorado and Katherine Garrison of San Angelo, Texas.
Roy was an avid sports fan and the Longhorns were his favorite. To his very last days he wanted to know how the Horns were doing and were they going to beat OU (and to hell with A&M).
Our father lived his life with integrity as a good Christian man. He was a member of the University Church of Christ, the Masonic Lodge and the Shrine. To his last days he kept his thoughts and prayers on those things he felt most important - his faith in Jesus Christ, his wife Doris and his family.
