Family survivors: wife, LaVonne Baker of Austin, Texas, daughter, Heather Oliver and husband Marlis Oliver of Austin, Texas, son Bryden Baker and wife Katherine Baker of New Braunfels,Texas. Grandsons: Baker, Jackson and Charlie Oliver of Austin, Texas and Ayden Baker of Houston, Texas and nephew Jeff Chatman of Little Rock.
After graduating from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville in 1964 with a degree in Accounting, he entered the US Army as an officer and returning from Korea he began his career as an auditor with the Federal government and retired over 40 years later. He moved his family from Little Rock, Arkansas in 1980 to Austin, Texas while with the Federal Department of Transportation.
He placed his faith in Jesus Christ at the age of 26 in Little Rock and soon became involved in serving including the bus ministry and teaching young couples. They joined Allandale/Great Hills Baptist Church in Austin where he was a Bible Life Teacher and Deacon for over 40 years.
He was an avid bass fisherman and was a member of the Austin Christian Bass Club for over 35 years priding himself in only catching “Christian bass.” He collected O-Gauge model trains and loved the game of golf. He had a fetish for watches and flashlights.
One of his greatest joys, hands down, was being Vandegrift High School’s biggest fan attending every sporting event his grandsons competed in through their senior years as well as events of their friends.
He enjoyed visiting boat, car and motorcycle dealerships where he collected an untold number of brochures along with frequenting Academy Sports and Bass Pro Shop and any financial institution that offered complimentary snacks.
As a winsome, outgoing and friendly man he met so many people. But of all his assets, his Christian faith was most important and evident in his life. Putting others first came naturally to him. He truly lived in such a way that he will be missed greatly.
