Roger was born into a military family, attending 11 schools during his primary and secondary education. This upbringing enhanced his ability to immediately take interest and be comfortable with strangers in any environment. Roger would always stop to help people in distress. He was as comfortable in a ballroom of dignitaries as he was in a mechanic shop. He had the ability to be truly interested and caring for others.
In his working career, Roger approached each job as if he owned the business or institution, performing his work to the best of his ability. He proudly worked for The University of Texas at Austin as a carpenter for 20+ years. He made many close friends during those years and loved his clients, the faculty, staff and students. He knew many trades and was a clever problem-solver. He also had many years of landscaping under his belt. His approach to landscaping jobs was always with an artistic eye, creating a vision. He had many artistic talents as well such as painting, drawing and architectural drawings.
Roger also worked in an array of jobs in trades such as brick-laying, masonry, electrical, glass manufacturing, welding, new home construction, etc. His true love was working on his 1966 Chevy truck, “Gloria.”
Roger’s love for animals and bugs was predominant in life. He knew about all bugs, their life cycle, feeding habits, etc. At a banquet one evening in the past, he was observed discussing entomology with the Dean of the School whose advanced specialty was that topic. He was comfortable with all people in all environments. He truly “danced with the wolves,” interacting and speaking with dogs, coyotes, deer, owls, lizards, etc. Anyone who knew him knew he had a special spiritual connection with animals. He always had family dogs.
Roger was a loving, loyal husband, whose integrity cannot be matched. He and Penny were married for 35 years, living in Austin. He loved Austin and was proud to be a Longhorn! He cherished his friends. He was proud of his family. He will be missed by all who knew him.
