Roberta Hartung was born on April 16, 1913. She celebrated her 102nd birthday with her family earlier this year. Roberta passed peacefully into heaven surrounded by her loving family on August 22, 2015. Well done, good and faithful servant; enter into the joy of your lord. Matthew 25:23.
Roberta was born on a ranch near Montrose, Colorado to Lura and Alvin Rouse. She moved to Texas with her family in 1928. She received her Bachelor's degree from Southwest Texas Teachers' College and her Master's degree from the University of Texas at Austin. Roberta started her teaching career in a Caldwell County school near Lockhart, Texas. There she met her husband, Allie Robert Hartung, who she married in 1938. She continued her teaching career in Prairie Lea and in Lockhart. When her husband was transferred to Austin by the LCRA in 1943, she continued to teach in Matthews Elementary and Palm Elementary schools. She took a few years off to have a family. She re-entered the education field teaching half days at Rosedale Elementary School, then taught full time for a few years. In 1966, Roberta was made principal of Rosedale. In 1975, she became the Area Director for 16 Austin elementary schools. In 1980, she served as Director of Elementary Education for all AISD elementary schools. Roberta retired in 1981, but remained very active in education related organizations and in church activities.
Roberta was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother and sister. She is survived by her daughter, Donna Brandon (Rodney Bohl), son, Jim Hartung (Debbie), and son, Jerry Hartung (Maggie); four granddaughters - Becky Brandon Abbott, Robin Brandon Pirnat, Julie Hartung Vuong, and Becca Hartung Stepler; 4 great grandchildren with a 5th due soon; and nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Roberta Hartung to Hyde Park Christian Church, the Austin Retired Teachers Scholarship Fund, or to a personally selected charity.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from six o’clock until eight o’clock in the evening, on Friday, the 28th of August 2015, at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, Texas.
Funeral services will be conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning on Saturday, the 29th of August 2015, in the Colonial Chapel of Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, Texas. Interment will follow in Cook-Walden Capital Parks, Pflugerville, Texas.
