Robert J. (Pops) Setliff, age 81, of Austin, passed away Tuesday, October 20, 2020. Robert was born in Austin, Texas on September 17, 1939. His parents were Beatrice Lackey Townsley and Thomas Earl Setliff. Robert worked as a contract painter for many years in Austin. He went to Wm. B. Travis High School and was a veteran serving in the United States Marine Corps. Growing up Robert excelled in many athletic endeavors. He boxed in the Austin Annual Golden Gloves, participated in competitive swimming and diving events and gymnastic competitions. Robert enjoyed shooting pool, attending horse races, playing poker and taking road trips.
Of the many things Robert has done the most memorable was his recovery from alcohol and his dedication to helping others. For the pasts 38 years Robert has worked with many men and women in the recovery field and in AA.
Robert is survived by his four children, Pamela Stoikes and husband Mark, Robert C. Setliff, Julie Coxe and husband Mike, Michael Setliff; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Tuesday, October 27, 2020 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 2620 South Congress Ave, Austin, Texas 78704. Funeral Service with USMC Honors to follow at 1:00 pm. Interment will follow service at 3:30 pm in the family plot at the IOOF Cemetery, 1117 East 7th Street, Georgetown, Texas.
The family wishes to thank all the staff who cared for Robert at the Onion Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation and to express their heartfelt appreciation to the AA Community for their continuous love, support and visits with Robert and the many rides to his beloved AA meetings.
Currently, due to the substantial public risk, city and state government mandates that social gatherings of limited amounts may occur with strict social distancing protocol. Current COVID protocols for Travis County, guests must wear protective masks at all times while inside the funeral home facility and practice the recommended six foot social distancing. Weed-Corley-Fish South will limit our capacity to 70 guests at a service while enforcing all distancing and hygiene standards. We appreciate your understanding.
