On Friday, March 5, 2021, Robert M. Phillips III (“Bob”, “Bobby”, “Sparky”, “Dad”, "Gramps", and “Big Papi”), devoted husband and father of five children, passed into His Savior’s arms with his family by his side.
Bob was born March 17, 1954, (making him believe he was Irish) in Chicago, IL to Shirley and Robert M. Phillips, Jr. Childhood moves took him from Chicago, to Ft. Lauderdale, Cincinnati, and Minnesota and finally the great state of Texas where he received his History degree from the University of Dallas. He then earned his law degree from the University of Texas in 1979, and practiced law in Texas for over 40 years. In 1989, Bob became the first Board Certified Specialist in Criminal Law in Williamson County, and was later named a Texas Super Lawyer, featured in Texas Monthly magazine.
On August 4, 1979, he married his beloved Texas sweetheart, Jeanne Groesbeck. Together they poured their lives into raising their five children, David, Stephanie, Hannah, Paul, and Joey. Bob loved the game of baseball - his knowledge was encyclopedic and exceeded only by his passion and collection of memorabilia. He passed on his love for the game to each child and grandchild and was a Texas Rangers season-ticket holder for 25 years. The family etched many indelible memories at the team’s former home, The Ballpark in Arlington.
Bob lived and loved tenaciously, touching countless lives as a loyal husband, the most amazing Dad, Little League and Mock Trial coach, Sunday school teacher and elder at Redeemer Presbyterian Church, true friend, champion of the sovereignty and grace of God, and as “The Voice” of the Regents Knights for almost two decades. A lover of fine wine, great cigars, and beautiful words, Bob never shied away from the stage or microphone. He was passionate in debate, fervent in teaching the gospel, effusive in praise, and kind in nature. His unforgettable voice, often heard singing Sinatra, slipping into Cosell impressions, passionately explaining Scripture, cheering on his Texas Rangers, or leaving delightfully long voice mails will be deeply missed along with his twinkling eyes and contagious smile.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Shirley Phillips, and survived by his two sisters Nancy and Kathy, and his only cousin Larry Ogren. His legendary legacy lives on in his wife Jeanne, his five children, and his eight grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 11th, at 1:00 PM at Redeemer Presybterian Church 2111 Alexander Ave, Austin, TX 78722. The service will be livestreamed at www.redeemerpres.org.
