Robert Alton Lumpkin went home to be with The Lord on February 7, 2014. Bob was born on March 2, 1937 in Fort Worth Texas to Kent and Alton Lumpkin. Bob accepted Christ as his Savior in March of 1955 following a morning worship service at the First Baptist Church of Fort Worth.
Bob graduated from Amon Carter High School in Fort Worth, Texas and went on to attended Texas Wesleyan College in Fort Worth. Later Bob would also attend the Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri, Indiana University in Bloomington Indiana, and the Bible Baptist Seminary in Arlington, Texas.
Bob proudly served his country in the Texas National Guard U.S. Army Reserve from 1956 -1965.
Bob's first ministry position was serving as the Youth Minister of First Baptist Church in Fort Worth from1959- 1965. Later, Bob worked for Bell & Howell Corp. in Sales from 1965-1976, meanwhile teaching Sunday School at Sagamore Hill Baptist Church in Fort Worth until 1970. Later that year, Bob moved to Austin Texas and joined as a member of Hyde Park Baptist Church.
Bob quickly got involved in the ministry of Hyde Park Baptist Church by helping start their TV Ministry, Singles Ministry, Recreation Ministry, and helped expand their Bus Ministry. In 1976 he joined the staff of Hyde Park as their first Recreation Director, and began the youth camp known as "Camp Travis", where over the year's hundreds of youth spent their first week of summer water skiing, and most importantly, many accepted Christ as Savior and dedicated their lives to His Service!
In 1980 Bob started "Highlands," a Singles Retreat Weekend and ACAA. Austin Christian Athletic Association offered adult sports leagues in softball, volleyball, basketball, and flag football to all Austin Area Churches. In 1982 Bob began developing "The Quarries" a 60 acre recreational facility which would ultimately contain a 15 acre spring fed lake, an open air pavilion, walking trails, 3 softball fields, a football field, playground, sand volleyball courts, and tennis courts. During his years at Hyde Park, Bob development one of the most respected Church Recreation Ministries in the country, where 1000's of people were involved in Christian sport leagues each week. Many men and women's lives where changed through the fellowship and friendships that were developed through those leagues.
Bob began teaching the Graduate Student Ministry "One Way" in 1992.
In 1995 Bob Founded a Senior Adult camp called "Camp Meeting". During his years at Hyde Park he was also famous for his Steak Suppers and for his Bible Studies on Bible Prophesy! Bob retired from Hyde Park in 2004.
In 2007 Bob helped form and became a charter member of Austin Baptist Church.
Bob is remembered for his booming base vocals and his dry and witty sense of humor. He was a loyal friend and encourager, and also mentored many who now serve Christ in the ministry.
Bob is survived by his Mother: Kent Lumpkin, Brother: Jim Lumpkin and wife Barbara, Sister: Linda Martin and husband Richard, 6 Nieces and Nephews, 12 Great Nieces and Nephews, and 3 Great Great Nephews.
Visitation will be held from 7:00-9:00 pm on Wednesday, Feb 12th at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home on North Lamar.
Graveside services will be at 11:00 am on Thursday, Feb 13th at Liberty Hill Cemetery on Hwy 29.
Memorial service will be at 11:00 am on Friday, Feb 14th at Austin Baptist Church, 7016 Ribelin Ranch Drive, Austin, TX 78750.
