brothers and very close friends.
Robert was born May 24, 1960 to Demetrio and Mary Hernandez of Chicago, Illinois. Robert grew up in Chicago and
attended Lane Technical College Preparatory High School.
Robert joined the Air Force in June 1978, where his first duty assignment was the wilderness of Fairbanks, Alaska at
Eielson AFB. He was transferred to Lackland AFB, San Antonio, Texas in July 1980. He met Tina, his wife of 34 years,
at Lackland. Robert received an honorable discharge from the Air Force in June 1982.
Robert joined the Austin Police Department in September 1983 and was commissioned as a Police Officer February 3, 1984.
He retired from the department June 19, 2008.
Robert received his Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, August 12, 2006 and his Master of Science in Criminal Justice,
May 16, 2009, from Texas State University, San Marcos, Texas. Shortly after receiving his Master’s, he was invited to be an
Adjunct Lecturer at the School of Criminal Justice at Texas State University. He had just finished the 2015 Fall Semester and
was preparing for the 2016 Spring Semester.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Demetrio and Mary Hernandez, and brothers, James Hernandez and Stephen
Hernandez. He is survived by his wife, Tina; brothers, John and wife, Katie Hernandez of Louisville, Kentucky, and Peter
Hernandez of Elizabethtown, Kentucky; lifelong friend, Al Contreras of Homewood, Illinois; Air Force friend, Brian Van Alstine,
Aurora, Colorado, and many relatives and friends who will always cherish his memories.
Of all the communications that I have received over the past few days, these are the words that were constantly repeated;
mentor, teacher, police officer, friend, but most of all a great person.
I would like to thank the fantastic medical staff at Seton Medical Center, Main, IMC for their kindness and making sure that
Robert was comfortable.
