Mr. Edgar was born January 2, 1924, and raised in Eustace, Texas, the youngest son of Matthew Elijah and Annie Eunice (Oliver) Edgar Leath. After graduating from Maybank High School in 1942, he moved to Austin where he attended the University of Texas, graduating in 1945 with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration. He met his wife, Lovie Howeth, in Austin and they were married in 1947 at the home of his sister and her husband, Johnny and Dorothy (Edgar) Shriver. In 1942, he joined the U.S. Army Air Force, attaining the rank of Sergeant. Mr. Edgar contracted pneumonia, causing the collapse of one lung. This contributed to his eventual illness and death; and, in the last few years, he was categorized a 100% disabled veteran. After serving with the Army Air Force, Mr. Edgar worked for Zale Jewelers, managing their Mission Jewelers location at 619 Congress Ave. where he won numerous sales and management awards. Mr. Edgar was an active member of Central Baptist Church, later renamed Allandale Baptist Church and eventually moved and renamed Great Hills Baptist Church located now at 10500 Jollyville Rd., Austin, Texas.
A committed follower of Jesus Christ, a loving family man, and a hardworking businessman, Dick Edgar lived out his faith day by day in quiet determination to finish the race well. His polite manner and unexpected, dry sense of humor endeared him to those who had the privilege of knowing him.
